“Institutional Application of Futures Markets” Highlighting how futures markets have changed the financial landscape from the perspective of an academic, a regulator and an exchange. This session includes discussions of · Are derivatives substitutes or complements for traditional bank lending activities? This discussion includes a review of Diamond’s “Delegated Monitoring” suggesting that derivatives complement bank lending by reducing systematic risks allowing banks to take greater advantage of diversification opportunities. · The growth of “portable alpha” programs and the hedge fund industry. We provide the rationale for and operation of portable alpha programs and demonstrate how futures contracts are utilized to provide beta exposure.Increasingly, investors are turning to hedge funds to provide alpha exposures with the aim of providing superior investment returns. · The emergence of customized over-the-counter products offered by derivatives dealers. We discuss risk-transfer products including deal contingent forwards on commodities and forex and how they are used to mitigate institutional risks. Further discussion regarding how these dealers develop customized products for customers while laying off those risk using standardized exchange traded derivatives.
